Introduction to Westalee Rulers
Address: 8725 S. Kyrene Rd., Tempe, AZ 85284
Instructor: Pat Glenn (firstname.lastname@example.org)
This class will introduce students to free motion quilting with rulers on the domestic sewing machine using the Westalee 12 inch arc template and the 6-piece Sampler Set #1 . We will explore the uses of straight and curved line quilting, cross-hatching, and medallions included with Starter Set #1.
Be sure to order your rulers from Mulqueens well in advance of class.
Check online at https://www.westalee.com.au. Westalee has posted many tutorials to help you. Do NOT feel you have to watch all of these now! Just familiarize yourself with the resources there.
Check the class materials list below and pack accordingly.
Materials to bring to class:
-Sewing machine with extension table and Supreme Slider (or similar)
-Quilting gloves, bat scooters or other aid to help you grip fabric more firmly.
-40 or 50 wt machine quilting or embroidery thread and wound bobbins in your choice of color; several needles of appropriate size for your thread. 75/11 or 80/12 works well for 50 wt. Embroidery needles or topstitching needles work well with 40 wt.
-Appropriate ruler foot for your machine. If you are unsure, please consult a salesperson at one of the Mulqueen's stores for the correct foot for your machine.
-Westalee Ruler Work Starter Set #1 of acrylic templates specific to your machine (low or high shank) and ruler foot.
-Pencil with eraser. Several sheets of typing paper for note taking and design sketching.
-Erasable fabric marker such as a Frixion pen
-Regular or quilting ruler at least 12” long on one side for drafting on paper.
-At least 2 quilt sandwiches made with plain or tone-on-tone fabric and low loft batting. Fat quarters or 20" x 20" sandwiches made from yardage work well. Use fabric that will show your stitching, not a busy print.
Optional but useful: Handigrip tape for attaching to rulers, Crosshair ruler (large or small) to aid in initial fabric marking. I will make my own available for the class to share.
-Please bring your most patient self and your sense of humor. This is really fun!
